I'm sorry but every foreigner setting foot in the US should first have to take an extensive course on the history of slavery and racism in our society. When I come across new immigrants I make sure to tell them about the Civil War and why it was fought. I tell them that half of this country wanted slavery to continue indefinitely, and that most of those Confederate soldiers couldn’t even afford to own any slaves themselves. This really gets them to look at the US in a different light, rather than merely seeing us as a cash cow, “the land of opportunity.”
